I'm toying with the idea of grabbing a G19/G17 as a CCW, and I plan on feeding it nothing but cheap nasty dirty Tulammo with the occasional box of premium JHP for function testing. My current range gun is a 92fs which digests even the most despicable of Russian garbage with enthusiasm.
I'm looking for people to chime in who runs up their round counts with the russian stuff. I want to make sure I'm not jeopardizing a CCW's reliability by running it at the range in high volume!
Please don't reply telling me "for just a dollar more you can have WWB, blazer etc." Yes, I know. But this thread is about high volume steel case, steelish jacketed crap ammo only.
In a handgun? Short of a custom 1911, I wouldn't have a problem shooting wolf in any of my handguns. I've seen enough anecdotal evidence of the wolf .223 that I would not run that in an AR having taken note of the switch from steel -> brass. Even in my Sig Legions, I might run a box or so of Wolf just to see how they run, but I don't expect any problems in my 9mm glocks.
I have shot Russian ammo in my handguns and rifles on various occasions. No ill effects. The strange thing is that upon arriving home from the range, I have an insatiable hankering for a dirty vodka martini.
Hmmm. :drinkie:
Good article-- for AR rifles with chrome lined barrels. But if you can shoot that much ammo, you can afford to change your barrel.
For handguns, you are very unlikely to get the barrels as hot with the volumes fired in this test, and most handgun barrels are nitride ("Tenifer") not chromed.
I was thinking about linking this same article. It looked like the bimetal jackets on the Russian ammo destroyed the barrels sooner, but saving $80 per case means that assuming the barrel lasts 4000 rounds you have $3200 to spend on a new barrel (or a few new rifles).
I generally buy and shoot brass cased ammo as I don't want to make my suppressors dirtier than necessary, I do have some steel case wolf and Tula .223 ammo stacked and have been considering buying some cheap 9mm and .45 ACP.

I use the Cabela's brand "Herters" (I believe it's called) made in the Czech Republic. Anyone have their 2 cents on that? It's cheap and sells like mad at Cabela's.
I saw mention of the Luckygunner test of steel cased ammo in ARs earlier. I think they were dumping ammo through the barrels in that test pretty much as quickly as they could do so on semi auto. I think that duty cycle may have something to do with the barrels getting shot out more than the fact that it was a bimetal jacket ammo.
As seen in the rifle test the whole overall effect of the steel budget ammo was to decrease barrel life significantly. I doubt too many of us will ever shoot out a 9mm barrel. Sure someone will pop out of the toolies and tell us how they burned out 5 or 6 barrels last year, there arent too many of them. Ive not shot any steel case out of the only 9 we have-a G43. But Ive shot a bunch -perhaps 500 or 600 out of a Ruger LC9 without a hitch, without a lot of extra cleaning and the accuracy f it was really very good. 10" plate at 50 yds shooting 2 handed ran about 80% , seemed better than other budget stuff. BTW Midway sells a G19 extractor for 17.99$.
Yeah, that Fed aluminum is getting cheaper all the time. I do know some of that steel case Monarch stuff made in Yugoslavia is loaded up hotter. I 'spect the Russians do that too.
