A different twist on the initial thread question: I've been thinking about just transporting (not storing) my G-19 in my motorcycle's seat storage compartment while traveling to the range. I'd also pack a small range bag (including ammo) in with it. Sounds like a non-problem....thoughts?
There have been some studies on cookoff. A study on 7.62 ammo in a hot barrel determined they cook off at 150-155 degrees centigrade. Quite hot. Some auto-ignition temperatures listed on primer MSDS sheets cite ~250F.
Our take home message? Well...
250-300 degrees F is reaching a known and documented unsafe temperature. One should stay far from that temperature to remain safe.
So, put a small glass of water in your car (or motorcycle). If it starts rapidly boiling (~212 F, +/-), get your ammo out. The gun owner should also exit the car quickly, as third degree burns will begin almost immediately (the pain will be your first indicator, not the boiling water!).
If somebody actually manages to boil water in their car due to outside temperature and sunlight heating the internal compartment (no torches or heaters allowed!), please include a video. I will be quite entertained!
