Do you reload for it? What kind of velocity out of 7.5 in barrel?

I can't think a rifle round would burn much powder in 7.5 inches, but maybe with some faster burning pistol powders? (I don't mean as fast as bullseye or red dot).

Actually the Lyman manual or Loadbooks USA manual for 45-70 (which includes the Lyman info) for 45-70 might have information for using Unique in the 45-70. The older Lyman manuals definitely do, and it works very well. But regardless of what powder you use you're going to lose a lot of velocity when going from a rifle length barrel to a pistol length barrel.

The 460 Smith & Wesson works better in shorter barrels because it has less case capacity than the 45-70.

Also, the powders that develop highest velocities with the least pressure are often the slower burning powders and can deliver higher velocities even out of shorter barrels than a faster burning powder.

I've used Unique in my 45-70 rifle and I like it because it delivers black powder velocities with a very small amount of powder and is economical. However, caution must be used as pressures will increase at a much faster rate than velocities.

Basically you're going to get about 11 to 1200 fps with a 400 grain bullet with about 12 or 13 grains of Unique. Alliant 2400 powder might actually be a better powder for higher velocities at lower pressures than what you'll get with Unique.

Another powder that might be interesting to try is Trail boss, and maybe even FFg or FFFg Black powder, FFF being faster burning.
