New? Universal?

For those of you that shoot (shot) Universal, the machine has been replaced and the powder is available. I loaded about 100 45 GAP rds with a near max load and when I shot them they barely cycled the gun and I heard that tell tale Phit..... Dink.

So I thought it was probably me and my recipe. I checked all aspects and my load should have been at the top of the range for the bullet, caliber etc. Anyone else have an issue with "New" Universal?

Thanks

I just got a pound a couple weeks ago to play with in 9mm and got very good Accuracy with 4 grs under a 124 gr tc bullet loaded at 1.075 from bayou bullets. The group was 1.75"@20yds rested. The only thing I didn't like about it was smokie and a little dirty comparing it to my load that I been using which is 3.8 grs of prima v. I can go up to 4.3 grs with universal so I don't know if the universal will clean up any or not by bumping it up a few more tenths? I'm really not looking for top performance but just want to make min power factor.

No this is the first time to ever to load any with this powder why has it changed or something? It just seemed like it should be a good all around powder. My main interest for it right know is the 9mm. I think it is probley better suited for the other rounds that I was thinking of using it in plus I just enjoy playing lol.

Bought 2 lb of that a year ago while looking for a low recoil recipe. Used 1 lb of it in my rifle, 45LC loaded on the low end of the book. Very dirty, unburnt powder all over. Worked fine in the rifle, just dirty. The other LB sits unopened.

Thanks willy for the offer and thanks to those who replied. I am going to make a concerted effort to use clean brass, weigh every charge and every bullet and see if I can trouble shoot. I will report back over the weekend, thanks again.

For my 200gr coated SWC'c I am at the maximum factory recommended load with a 3 year old can of Universal. My chrony reports them @ 958 which is about 25 fps faster than the factory recommended max load. Universal has been my "go-to" powder for target ammo for the GAP for the past 5 or 6 years.

For JHP that need a bit more speed I use Blue Dot or CFE-Pistol.

I am using 5.7gr of Universal with CCI or S&B primers with the 200 gr coated SWC. I am shooting a G37.

I used my Speer manual and data that was available online from Hogdon to come up with the load parameters when I ran out of Bullseye back in 2011.

I have been reloading GAP since it came out. The limited info for load data has been contradictory at best. Included in my notes is a couple of your speadsheets from June 2012 on GAP data.

Other powders I have used are:
CFE-Pistol - It is my second choice for target ammo. I will be switching over to it when I use up my current supply of Universal in a year or two.
Bullseye - there are a couple of loads I have used, mouse fart to stout loads.
HP-38 - Good backup for Universal.
HS-6 - just behind HP-38.
Power Pistol - it works OK, better in 9mm
Blue Dot - for go fast rounds with a slightly compressed load
TiteGroup - a bit smoky but there is a small window where it performs well
Unique - It runs hotter than I like, excellent for JHP

I think sending powder would be problematic anyway.

Depending on how you feel about shooting another's reloads (all the smartest guys I know refuse to do it.. ;) ), I could load up some comparison loads with the old stuff. I have a lot of different bullets and primers to pick from, I could even probably do them with the same headstamp and send you some of the same headstamp and bullets for your comparison tests. I think plain old people can send loaded ammo.

If you decide you would like to pursue it, I can contact UPS and see how hard it might be.

WeeWilly,

I appreciate the offer. I really think I need to access a chrono before I ask anyone to assist other than providing advice, I made 10 rounds meticulously weighing bullet and charge and they still shot like a bb gun. If I am really getting 900 fps+ with this load, I will be tickled pink.

Thanks Turn, I was thinking of going up 1/2 a grain. That will mimic your load as I load an xtreme 200 grn coated JHP. I have great loads with Power Pistol that match the Speer GDHP but I also have 8 lbs of Universal and it was what I was using before the fire destroyed the machine.

It's amazing how long an 8 lb jug seems to last for pistol powder...

Let me know how the Xtreme plated 200gr HP's work. I have a bag of them and 2 bags of the plated 200gr FN that I got on Black Friday last year that I haven't had a chance to use yet.

The Xtremes are all I shoot out out of my 45 GAP's (Except the Speer GDHP). Very accurate and reliable.

I changed my recipe to 5.8 grns, I will report out later in the W/E.
