LEO Feelings on CCW

As a Law Enforcement Officer what is your individual feeling on properly trained CCW adults in your area? Are they a welcome sight when you encounter them, a Pain in the *** to differentiate, doesn't matter? How could they become even better and more welcome in your experience?

I'm all for it and think it is a great idea and IMHO, it greatly reduces violent crime. Every citizen who isn't a felon, mentally ill or addicted to substances should carry everywhere they go.

If the person is a truly well trained CCW carrier I would have no opinion since I should not be able to pick him out from the crowd. On the other hand if he or she is like many CCW folks I would notice the weapon and then start to wonder what they are up to. No action on my part just observe and be ready to deal with the situation if it developed. In general I don't have any specific issues with CCW permit holders but it does make life more interesting trying to separate the good guys from the bad.

Not a LEO, but I can at least understand why someone who deals with strangers all day long would feel better if they knew there was less chance of the strangers they meet being armed. Logically, though, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to wish the practice of CC was illegal since someone willing to murder you on the roadside isn't going to follow that pesky law.

As someone in a "constitutional carry" state, I carry without a permit. The OP asked about "properly trained CCW" but how about folks like me? I see a couple of responses in favor already, thanks.

For the record, I took the class, but didn't send in for the permit. I suppose that makes me "properly trained" but a LEO wouldn't know that I took the class.

IIRC this guy would get drivers worked up and then turn his camera on. He would play it cool for the camera but was really a jack wagon.

FWIW, I support CCW. I do not support the open carry fools who walk down the road with a rifle to try to prove a point.

I support constitutional carry but...

...I would like to see McGruff offer free firearm safety and use of force/deadly force training to interested civilians.

Happyguy :)

Here in IL up until the last couple of years the only citizens authorized to lawfully go armed were police and licensed PIs/security guards en route to or from the job. Pretty restrictive. As one of the last 2 states in the nation to approve concealed carry you can imagine the hysteria from our progressive politicians. Now several years into it there have been a handful of lawful self defense shootings and a handful of idiots exercising poor judgment. And the parts of Chicago that always had high levels of violent crime still do. And blood isn't running in the streets everywhere else as predicted. Training is required (16 hours) and it does cover use of force law, forcible felonies, etc.

For me the issue was not the permit carrying CCW individual. I'm fine with that as an expression of your 2nd Amendment rights. The issue is determining who is legally carrying versus someone up to no good. Trying to protect the public and infringing on their rights is a very fine line.

I don't carry as an expression of my 2A rights - I'm not an activist.

Also, if the issue is determining who is legally carrying versus someone up to no good, I have to ask, if you were in a constitutional carry state (you're not, right?), would it make a difference? I would think you would assume everyone is legal to carry unless something else about that individual made you think otherwise.

I think to an extent, it's a cultural thing, by state;

Here in the state that has the most active CCW licenses by far , (1,755,580 active CCW permits), I can tell you that by and large, most people in law enforcement here in FL love it; We have had a number of incidents where ccw holders defended themselves against criminals, and just a few months ago, a ccw holder shot and killed a man who was attacking a law enforcement officer, undoubtedly saving that officer's life (while 20 other people stood around with their cell phone cameras not helping) ....

The cops that I have met here who are anti-ccw have , without exception, been transplants from other states where almost no one gets a ccw and the only people carrying are cops and crooks.

No issue here. We went from having to have a permit to constitutional carry last year. Blood is not running in the streets and there have been no issues. Cops that are actually working the road and doing cop stuff have no issue with it...at least the ones I work with. The politically motivated admin types had a little heart burn initially, but they've survived.

This is usually the case. They want to make something out of it and then go with the flow.

I always wonder why people with permits aren't carrying more often. I ask people this when i stop them.

I would prefer that more of them would carry. They are responsible for their own protection. They can call 911 but it's going to take me a few minutes at the fastest if I'm close by to get there. By them I'm just reactionary and dealing with after the fact

Also, while I know that in many places the admin types may be against ccw , to the extent that they publicly display their anti-gun bias, in quite a few other places the agency heads are all for citizens arming themselves, even offering gun safety/ccw training courses to the public at little to no charge as part of their community outreach....

I had a concealed carry permit before I had a badge. No concerns from me with concealers. I'm okay with permitless concealed carry as well, although I'm glad that the Constitutional carry bill that came up in this year's session of the KY General Assembly died. Clean it up a little for next year, specifically restricting the age to 21 instead of 18 as this year's bill proposed, and I imagine it will pass.

Now, the open carry people on the other hand...

I have zero issues with people carrying. I do wish my state would institute some type of training in use of force and/or maybe a basic safety course with some type of shooting before issuing the permit. Maybe what armed security are required to do, which is like hitting the broad side of a barn. We mandate Hunter Education and more recently a boaters safety course. Even something online, like the free boaters safety course I took, would be better than nothing.

I support CCW by ordinary members of the community with two conditions:
1. They must complete training in LEGAL use of force.
2. They must demonstrate proficiency in safely handling their firearm and shooting accurately. This should include an ANNUAL range visit to demonstrate their ability to hit what they are aiming at.

I was always for law abiding citizens being able to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights. Since I was NYPD the majority of contacts I had with armed people were with off duty MOS from "where ever" on vacation who I enjoyed interacting with and professional courtesy was always extended. I ran into 2 business owners who had full NYC carry permits and a "few" perps that were good for OT. Retired 29 years ago. Yikes.

I think people that ask these questions are stunted in their maturity and decision making skills.
I am all for mature adults carrying firearms if they behave like mature adults when carrying them.
