I'm thinking about buying a Galil Ace. Looking at the pistol model with brace. Anyone have any first person experience shooting one or thoughts in general about them?
I'm owned a pre-ban Galil in 308 and was somewhat interested in acquiring one of the 308 ACE rifles until I got my hands on one. While lightweight and likely very reliable, it felt very underwhelming for $1800 (though I realize that this is $1-2k under what a pre-ban Galil brings these days)...
I received my Galil ACE 5.56 on July 7. I am a AK guy and this rifle is really an enhanced AK. IMHO this is the finest made AK platform out there. It is a quality weapon and I would not expect anything different from IWI. This weapon has been to the range twice so far and no problems or issues. I still love my SAM7sf but it is no match to the ACE. I have owned a Tavor since late 2013 and IWI builds quality weapons.
For the "advancements" on the ACE-AK, the VZ58 has all those features, and still weighs less, and costs slightly less to boot. The lightweight and the graceful simplicity of the VZ58 (also a milled receiver) blows away the complicated AK platform. The Galil just adds more complications.
I urge you to check one out...the Czechpoint versions, not the Century clones.
All I know is that after I get settled into my new place I'm getting a quality AK with an under folding stock. Why? Because, oh no you zombies have me pinned in a closed quarter and I can't use my rif--- oh wait let's under fold the stock because screw you zombie apocalypse
Bare AR With nothing on it, like modified handguards, optics, and without a mag. It's also mostly aluminum upper, and lower.
Apples to oranges.
The gen2 Galil Ace is a steel milled receiver, full railed steel dustcover, and comes with a 3/4 aluminum railed handguard, steel folding stock mechanism. Also a piston. You want light weight recce, this is not it.
Bren 2, if you want a light weight piston rifle/pistol. Both ACE and Bren 2 are great rifle. Stay away from 7.62x39 Bren2. Locking lugs round off in that caliber.
Stamped WBP Mini Jack or stamped micro Draco would be the lightest x39 choices.
Stamped AKM receiver will always be lighter than a milled Type 3.
VZ58 has that opened receiver. I never could could get over that.
