First batch of 10mm reloads to try...

Got my new G29 in today and promptly went to the reloading cave and started making some recipes.

Only used two types of bullets; Hornady 180gr XTPs and my RCBS 180gr cast which actually come in at 188gr after lubed and sized to .401.

Tried two different powders; Titegroup and WSF. Did a 7.0gr and 6.0gr batch for the WSF, which is high end and low end for WSF. Only did max load of 6.0gr for the Titegroup. All were done with OAL of 1.260.

No issues during the process. Plunked the rounds in the barrel and there is a LOT of slop in the chamber. Not sure if this is a Glock thing or what... I bought a box of commercial plinking ammo and it fits the same.

Will be upgrading to a KKM 4.5" barrel next month. Will report back with range results tomorrow night.

Have never shot a 10mm, but after shooting my .45 Colt with hot-loaded 300gr bear loads and surviving, I am not too afraid...

Learned that the pistol definitely prefers the Hornady XTP 180gr bullet. That's fine; my local WalMart stocks them at $23 a box.

And it definitely preferred the WSF powder over the Titegroup. I only tried one TG load maxed out at 6.0grs but with the XTPs, it was OK. With the cast bullets, it was awful. Shot two groups because the first one was missing a hole in the paper; no idea where it went. Second group was nearly as bad.

Will have to pick up another powder to try to see if I can improve with the cast bullets, but anything under 3" with my cast bullets in heavy loads makes me happy.

Try slower powders for the 10mm, especially with the cast bullets.
Personally, I wouldn't use Titegroup or WSF in 10mm, but that's just me.

Unique is a good powder for 10mm.
I wouldn't use anything faster than Unique.

Blue Dot is one of the best powders available for the 10mm.
If I could only use one powder for 10mm, it would be Blue Dot.

There is one sporting goods store within 50 miles of me. They have been out of Blue Dot and Power Pistol for months.

When I first started reloading, I took a picture of their powder selection so I could reference it while at home instead of making a 30-mile round trip to find out they didn't have it.

This photo was taken in October of last year...

Just got back from the range trying out the mild loads.

Wow! 180gr Hornady XTP with 5.7 grains of Unique was the clear winner with the best group I have ever fired with a pistol at 25yds. 1"

However, the same bullet with 5.7 grains of WSF was not far behind and was noticeably lighter recoiling. Will likely load that down a little and use it for more target practice. Hopefully my KKM barrel will like the cast bullets a little better so I can use those to my heart's content.

Also tried the HSM Buffalo Bore copycat bear load of 200gr hard cast. Not nearly as accurate and was high in recoil, but was acceptable accuracy with under 2.5".

Not sure if the 1" was a fluke or not. Tried to repeat it with the same load and it opened up to 1.5" the second try. I think this gun shoots better than I do...

Great report. I like WSF for mellowed loads.

Quick note on the so-so results with cast. Are you using the same expander plug that came with your kit? If so, it is likely dimensioned for jacketed bullets and too small of a diameter for cast. The problem is that your properly sized bullet might not be properly sized after seating.

I'm referring to the dimension of the shank that sets the interior diameter of the neck, not the case mouth flair. Using the standard expander plug, my .401" cast bullets swage down to .400" or a hair under. Way too small. My Glock needs 401. No less. Pulling and measuring bullet diameter is telling. Far too little attention is paid to the diameter of expander shanks, in my opinion.

My solution was to get an RCBS M style Cowboy expander plug for my RCBS die. They are sold as the 38-40 WCF Cowboy expander. About $7 at Midway if you have an RCBS die. $28 for the whole die. It is a couple thousandths larger than standard. Perfect for the right neck tension without swaging bullet diameter.

NOE also has an M style plug that works with the Lee Universal expander die. It is the right size for a 401 bullet. I've used their plugs for rifle and they work great.

Great plan! I have a couple NOE molds. One 5 cav 403-180-RF and a 2 cav 360-160-WC 360432. Both are great. Their handles are really nice too. Don't forget to order the sizing die body, pusher and bushing(s).
