At the end of the day it's pointless imo. To be honest I believe my county requires me to, I'm supposed to have them locked up seperately if not on me. It's the stupidest law ever. It would be the same as tellin everyone they have to leave their car keys in a different house or centralized lock box on every block just because there's a few drunk drivers out there.
Ammo needs to be stored with firearms at all times. Otherwise the point of owning a firearm is no longer existent.
Well, it kinda depends. I'd want to have at least one available fairly quickly, depending on location and such. Most of the rest could be locked wherever.
I have most locked away, but we live in a quiet, low crime area. I also have an outstanding early warning system.
All's well and understood. I explained why I have the guns and that I felt that having no ammo near the guns would defeat the purpose of a defense weapon and it was received well.
I keep all my guns loaded and locked in a safe except for what's on me. I have another safe stacked full of ammo right beside the one with the guns. I also have an overflow of ammo and loaded mags stacked on top the safe and more ammo stacked in the corner.
When I need a gun I want to be able to grab the first one and not have to look for ammo.
LOL. Things go back and forth around my house quite as far as opinions are concerned. I find that I have to explain myself quite often. Having a parent with a troubled past live with you can be very taxing and thus the reason I am not married ATM.
The reason she had a problem with it was because her fiance (my stepdad) kept his ammo and guns separate. But, when I explained the logic of why I keep my guns in their original packaging with locks and the keys where only I know where they are she understood the ammo was OK to be in the same room. I also told her how I felt about the idea of the ammo and guns in separate locations. I'm in agreement with the poster who made the blunt force weapon analogy.
That's like putting the hose in the back bedroom when the only faucet it will fit is in the kitchen. A fire is not going to wait for you to run collect your tools. Armed robber kicks in the door..you don't yell, "wait I have to go find the bullets and load my gun".
Nope, not an option for me. I'm sitting here waiting on the first pot of coffee to brew, checking email and stuff, and my carry gun went in my pocket when I got dressed. Everything else is under lock and key.
It just seems odd. I know plenty of hunters with a gun safe in the basement. It's not readily accessible anyways, but storing ammo on the other side of the house didn't seem like it would accomplish much.
That is fine for your deer rifle, your duck shotgun, and your target pistol, so long as they are not your primary self/home defense weapons.
