So with a 1911 I don't like to chamber one round more than once. But I noticed with my Glock I can chamber defensive ammunition a few times without bullet setback. How many times would you say could you chamber say a Federal HST 124gr or speer gold dot with out bullet setback. They all seem to chamber smoothly. In my profession I usually unload every other few nights. Thanks.
In my department we would have to load up in the beginning of a shift and unload after shift. The chamberd round that was ejected into the clearing barrel would be sent to the range for firing there. This way rounds would only be chambered once. Of course we had a Federal Budget to back us up! I dont think you will get much set back with loading and unloading but be very careful of dropping rounds on hard surfaces as that will create setback under the right condtions.
After two times, I rotate that round to the bottom of the mag or toss it in the practice bin. I don't unload my gun much unless I go somewhere to forces me to unload it. At home, when I'm done with it for the day, the gun goes into a safe, loaded. I keep a different gun at my bedside.
I may load a round five to ten times then I just shoot it and rotate to a new round. I tend to keep carry guns loaded all the time, so the round gets cycled when I use other range ammo or clean the pistol.
I've never had a problem with bullet setback. At a buck a round for my SD ammo I hate to be burning though my stash each time I load and unload my guns.
I've taken an HST and loaded it 100 times to see if it set back. No set back. I take a black permanent marker and black out the "bullet" to mark the chambered round so I can put a caliper to it once in a while.
My .45 HST and .380 Hydrashok rounds cases are crimped in the middle to prevent bullet setback, which is great. I wish my 9mm 147 HST rounds were too, but for some reason, Federal chooses not to crimp those cases
There are several good articles about this on the web. I've adapted a marking system and rotation. Once I've chambered a round 4 times, I shoot it. I also walk the slide forward when putting the SD mag back in, making sure it's in battery. I carry Federal HST 147gr and could probably re-chamber a lot more than 4 times, but with a 17-round mag, that's a lot of mag swaps before re-chambering the same round 4 times.
