Youth Running?

    I'm a part time runner, i.e. run off stress etc..
    This morning my 11 year old wanted to go since he was bored. Cool with me.
    We did 3 fairly quick miles and finished with some wind sprints. He is a very athletic kid (baseball, basketball) and did the run with no problem.
    My question is, are there any issues with distance running in kids that I should be aware of?

    Where are you in South Alabama? I used to live in Eufaula.

    I'm not claiming to be an expert or know all of the medical issues, but I'd say it's fine to take him on a run like that as part of his conditioning program. I personally wouldn't make distance running a very big part if I wanted him to remain fast and explosive, though. Also, distance running beats up most folks' bodies pretty badly. This is not a reason to NOT do it, but IMO it's a reason to make it only a small part of the conditioning program.

    Just my opinions.

    Here's the bottom line: There's also the enjoyment factor. If yawl just love to go on these runs, then forget that I said anything, LOL.

    Sorry for the time gap, I've been travelling.
    Thanks for the replies, we did about 2miles this morning. A whole lot faster than I usually do 2 miles! As long as he having fun kicking my butt we'll keep doing it.

    Heck, I don't see how 2-3 miles can hurt him. 2 miles, especially, is a very short workout, so it's not just grinding out slow mile after slow mile after slow mile training his body to operate that way.

    Shorter distances like your currently doing won't cause any damage, besides some temporarily sore muscles. Just don't do any extended distance running, as this isn't really good for anyone, much less and 11 year old.
