Would never happen here. . . Bet that's what the Greeks thought just a few years ago.

Starving Greeks line up for food in by the thousands

Queues form as desperate people received food handouts from Crete's farmers

Country struggling through a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 per cent

Banking controls will be next - people will not be allowed to transfer money out of Greek banks and into Swiss etc banks.

You may be right, but if they do that then they will be violating a basic rule of the EU and could cause a MAJOR backlash from both within Greece and from other countries.

There will be backlash from the people but not the governments. The governments need the people to keep their money in their country's banks to keep them solvent.

Won't happen here until AFTER B.O. is re-elected, anyway. If he gets re-elected. No way it would happen before.

And food lines will of course be the fault of the Republicans. That goes without saying.

Next few months, we'll be treated to all kinds of magical tricks showing us how well our economy is doing. The real evidence is being put on ice in media storage rooms for publication sometime after November 7.

Then, the failure will be used as evidence that more socialism is needed. More cowbell!

Has happened here. Not in some "ages long ago", but in my father's lifetime.

Yet some genuinely believe "it could never happen here"; regardless of the fact that there's historical proof to the opposite.

Oh,well. God loves stupid people too.

And it would be worse here then Greece the second time around.

The family and social structure has changed greatly for the worse sine the 30s.

Very astute observations on the politics of re-election! God help us all these are some crazy times that we are living in.

Yep that is so true. We have become a society of spoiled, lazy, and an instant gratifcation generation. You see this more in the younger generation. Can you imagine if people with smart phones could not longer afford them and had to give them up? OMG the suicide rate would triple.

Boy that's a fact. As a whole, my dad's generation was a whole lot tougher & a whole lot stronger, yet a lot less prone to sudden violence, than my kids' generation.

In my dad's day, it was hard-working people who suddenly found themselves asking for a handout. Nowadays we have huge percentages of people who have NEVER worked and have lived off handouts, and suddenly see those handouts in danger of being cut off. With no marketable skills, no work ethic, and no concept of "that belongs to someone else", group violence is an automatic response by a lot of folks nowadays.

Yes, that was what I was referring to by backlash. The people, not governments, I should have been clearer.

At this point seeing all the commentary about being on the brink of SHTF dozens of times, I'm convinced that reality will not be reflected in the economy/society until the president actually comes out and says "We're screwed!"

Short of that, they will keep printing money, borrowing imaginary money, and spewing filth about how things are "getting better" which everyone will eat up as the truth.
