Winchester SXP Defender

Discussion in 'Tactical Shotguns' started by pmcjury, Feb 12, 2013.

  1. I am thinking about picking up a new shotgun, and have been looking at the Winchester SXP defender. The only thing that has been keeping me from buying one is the lack of after market parts. I am specifically looking to put a light and side saddle on the shotgun.

I recently found that Tacstar is making a side saddle for the winchester SX3, and I was wondering if anyone knew if this would fit on the SXP.

The SX3 is an auto-loader so I doubt the pins are in the same location. The SXP is basically a modernized Win 1300 and is a clone to the FNH P12. I have been playing with these a bunch lately and just did a class for a department that switched from the 870s to the SXPs. They were very happy with the choice.

Lights on the mag tube are simple. Integrated into the fore end, a little tougher. I used a CTC Railmaster 202 (white light) on a tube mounted pic rail and it has been working so far. There will be more aftermarket stuff for them soon.

  4. I heard side saddles for a win 1300 are pretty close, but not an exact match, do you have any experience with a side saddle for a FNH P12 on an SXP

Sorry I don't. The group I was working with used the new Blade-Tech mini TMMS with the Carbon Arms TWinS in 8 packs which snap on their duty belt.

i saw there website say its tapped for scope bases now. Would it obstruct a bead if mounted or would it be low pro enough? Id want to mount a microdot of some kind and want a backup if it fails, ive been mostly looking at shotguns with ghost ring rails.

  7. ^ I like it...

  8. Barry, What light is that you have? Is that the L&M mount? I have the L&M on my gun, and it is slick.

  10. My wife gave me an SXP Defender for Christmas. So far I love it. Added an Uncle Mikes 5 shot shell holder to the butt stock and a cheap Cree 200 lumen flashlight using a Nebo clamp. Light works great and the clamp seems to hold so far.

Been thinking about a sling but not sure about that...is a sling apt to get hung on a door handle or something else around the house at a critical time...don't know. Haven't given up the thought.

  11. I have two Winchester Defenders, the older original Defender, and a model 1300...here you go.

    Attached Files:

  12. Let me clarifly...top two are the original Defenders...bottom is Model 1300 with vent rib...Nebo Redline 250 lumen lights mounted with Nebo clamp...solid setup with three light settings, sos, and strobe mode.

I looked at the SXP today at Academy. balances well, very light, don't know about the 5 round capacity, but overall looked good for $300. I have Mossberg 500's but would like to see the SXP in action.

Any new owners or maybe some updates from the current owners of the SXP Defenders? Do You still like it? Any problems?

  15. I now have about 40 rounds of 00 buck through it. All but 10 rounds were Winchester, of those 25 were 2 3/4 and 5 were 3 inch...no problems, good reliable shooting. The other 10 were some really cheap thin brass....don't recall the brand name but they were junk. Two of the expanded to the point that they could not be ejected normally....had to force the shells out.

Bottom line, love the SPX Defender but not the cheap ammo I tried to feed it. No issues with quality ammo.

  16. I ended up buying one. Once I have some time to run it some more ill post up some information

I have to tell You that despite having 870P this Winchester is very tempting, especially since the price is so good.

Bass Pro has the Winchester Marine SXP defenders on sale starting August 2...

  19. I had one for about a year. It was decent but I found it slow to load compared to the mossberg 500. I owned just about all the tacticool pumps and several high-end semi-autos and it's really hard to overlook the value of the 500. $300 buys you a mossberg 500 home defense gun thats made in USA. I probably paid a bit less for the SXP but I still prefer the mossberg.

The one advantage of the SXP has is that it will feed and eject the Aquila Mini shells which it will hold 9+1 vs the standard 5+1. If you load it up then the slower reloading time is meaningless as 10 rounds of even the mild 12 ga mini shells is nothing to sneeze at.

It takes me 3 seconds to put four rounds in the SXP, shoulder to shoulder, same as the 500...
