I thought it took a lot more work to refine gasoline then it did to produce motor oil :steamed:

Yes my car is using oil, leaking out the tappet cover gasket at the rate of a gallon every twenty miles, least I think that's where the oil leak is

Ya it's leaking on the exhaust manifold and causing smoke to come from under the hood,
it just started this a week ago, there's no oil on the ground and it's not burning it, I only drive a 1/4 mile to work but still I gotta do something. :dunno:

My short answer is that gas is not oil. Gasoline/petrol isn't even gas. They are all petrochemicals and hydrocarbons but they're none of them the same and none of them crude oil, either.

Motor oil is more expensive because it isn't just "oil". There are lots of other chemicals in it.

Same reason the tap water I use for a bath is so much cheaper than the 8 ounce bottles of Perrier I buy at the grocery store to mix with my 25 year old scotch LOL.

No offense intended as I do not know your situation, but if I lived 1/4 mile from work I'd be walking.

Valve cover gasket is a relatively easy fix. I got a worse one on my car - it's the front seal, the best I can determine. Doesn't leak too much oil, but it splashes right onto the exaust manifold and makes some smoke coming from under the hood in the morning.

Sometimes valve cover gaskets will leak just because the screws have gotten loose over time, and if you tighten them a little, it will stop leaking. Don't tighten too much though, because those gaskets can be pretty spongy sometimes and the screws aren't supposed to be all that tight to begin with. That's why some are kinda notorious for getting loose on their own after a while.

This is a LOT of oil to be leaking from a valve cover gasket.
If you're losing this much oil from thereI think you mave have other problems such as the oil return passages being blocked or perhaos even worse.

Raise your hood and let the engine idle and see if you can see this much oil leaking from the covers.
Snugging the bots us a bit could be the best route.

I'd also replace the PCV valve as it is the cheapest possible culprit but I don't believe there's no way that this could be causing such a serious problem

    Good luck.

If you don't already have a fire extinguisher in your car, you should probably make that your next stop.

I call BS. Not so long ago, conventional oil used to be 1.30 a quart while gasoline was 2.00 a gallon. Motor oil skyrocketed whe crude got up to 140/bbl and it hasn't come down since. Greed, pure and simple.
