Which generation USB do I have on my PC?

Discussion in 'Tech Talk' started by Thirties, Jul 20, 2004.

  1. I've got a Gateway AMD Athlon 600mhz PC running Win98SE bought in 2000. I know I don't have USB2.0, but how do I tell which USB I have? USB 1.0, 1.1 ???

Thirties, excuse me not strictly answering your question, but this also goes to the follow-on questions other GTers might have.

Check device manager under USB devices. If your controller has the word ‘enhanced’, it’s 2.0. If it doesn’t have the word ‘enhanced’, it’s 1.0.

The USB 1.1 specification affects peripherals only, not controllers; there is no v.1.1 controller standard. If you’re getting "This device requires a USB 1.1 compliant host controller." messages, it’s a known flaw in Win98 1st release (cured in SE) and a bug in some hardware setup programs.

  3. Slim, thank you for your clear and informative reply. I've got the 1.0 USB.
