I live in Ohio, which I consider middle of the pack. Which are the best gun states?

I am immediately dropping Texas which, for some inexplicable reason, does not reciprocate Ohio's CCW permit.

Im living in Alaska. No concealed carry permit required, and open or concealed carry is the norm.

Unfortunately the gunshine state is one of only 6 States that do not have an open carry provision and there is not one in site any time soon. Other that that it is not to bad. You can't conceal carry at sporting events, schools, polling places, government buildings, bars, or the portion of a restaurant where the primary purpose is to serve alcohol. That last one is the pita and the subject of constant debate. Technically you can't walk through the bar at an outback to get to the restroom but you can sit in the restaurant part and eat. You can be totally plastered and carry though as long as the gun is not in your hand 'immediately accessible' so iwb and drunk is ok. (I know what sense does that make with the primary portion of a restaurant provision. It is also probably not a smart thing to do)

Virginia certainly isn't the best but they are better than most.

Depends on what you care about

    Age? Purchase or carry?
    Open Carry?
    Concealed Carry?
    Permits required to carry?
Carry in schools, bars, government buildings?
    Carry while intoxicated?
    honoring other state CCW permits?
    being honored by states?
    FTF transfers?
    NFA, class 3?
    Castle Doctrine? in public?
    Background checks?

Actual non-enforcement/enforcement of laws? Just try open carrying in some of the major cities.

Virginia allows the above, requiring a permit only when carrying concealed; Not allowed in schools, but bars and even the state capital are OK.

No permit is required for open carry.

Better than Castle Doctrine are Stand Your Ground laws, which even work outside your home.

Open carry & FTF sales are probably what our homeboy founding fathers had in mind with the 2nd amendment.

NH is pretty good, no permit needed for OC and shall issue CC. Also no restrictions on NFA stuff. VT is better on carry with no permit needed for either OC or CC, but no suppressors.

Utah gets a perfect zero from the Brady Campaign. We have a bill (with a lot of support) before the state legislature right now that would make it a felony for any federal employee to confiscate firearms within Utah.
