I am going to start carrying a .45 1911 again and I have 230 grain Gold Dot, 230 +P Corbon w/the old Sierra bullet, Hornady 230 +P TAP FPD, 230 +P Gold Dot, 165 +P Power Ball, 230 +P HST, and 230 grain Winchester Ranger available to choose from.

I am not opposed to buying something else if it comes more highly recommended than what I have on hand.

Help me narrow it down please.

    Regards,
    Comrade Happyguy :)

Good to hear your going to start back with the 45acp... Sound wisdom ! ;)

If it is "factory ammo" I like 230gr GD's bonded, and 230gr Ranger T, Bonded, and then the 230gr XTP Tap.

My EDC most of the time "when in a town" is hand loaded 230gr XTP's at about 907fps out of the G36, but mostly carry my M1911.

    Hey good luck amigo

I'd go with the 230 gr. +P HST.

230 grain Gold Dot or Golden Sabre. I trust the expansion on either one.

Why the XTP over the others? I have a good supply of the +P version and the box says 950 fps.

Why is that? Because of the expansion? Would you be concerned about penetration if you were using this round?

I make the assumption that this is a 5" full size. If it were me, it would be the standard pressure Gold Dot 230 or the Ranger T 230. I see no need for +p in a full size 1911, or for that matter in my G36 (makes for harsher recoil). In fact, what I carry in my full size 1911, if and when I carry it, is the standard pressure 230 Gr. Gold Dot. In my Glock 36, I carry 230 Gr. Ranger T.

I would't want to be on the receiving end of any of the aformentioned. I load my G30 with 180gr. Critical Defense. From all the vids I've seen this bullet gets great penetration, expansion and weight retention.

    I second that thought.

My P220 is my HD gun. I have a TLR-1 on it. I do not shoot +P in .45, just my preference.

At the moment I have it loaded with 230g Gold Dots.

I have a few boxes each of the Gold Dot, 230g HST, and 230g Ranger. It doesn't make much difference to me which one its loaded with. I think those three are equally capable.

Yes, all my 1911's are full size. Thanks for the thoughts.

    230 gr Ranger T.

I'd have no problem whatsoever carrying Gold Dots or HSTs, but I just happen to have a large stash of Rangers, so that's what I use.

Cor-Bon 185gr DPX. This is the Barnes all copper hunting bullet; from all the test reports I read is (IMHO) the best penetrating/expanding bullet available, goes through auto windshields with minimal deflection and still expands in gelatin, goes through sheet rock and still expands, penetrates a motorcycle jacket and multiple layers of denim and still expands; no jacket-core separation, opens into 6 pedals and nearly double diameter. It is loaded in everythin the wife and I carry including my .45.
