I remember reading once on here that there are certain mags not to use in a aluminum frame 1911 I searched and couldn't find the thread.:dunno:

Mags with metal followers are no-no's.

Why would a metal follower hurt an aluminum frame?
When they first came out with the alloy lightweights there were nothing but metal followers.
I don't see any of the followers hitting the feed ramps on my 1911 frames.

Wilson 47D's...but it has nothing to do with the AL frame. Wish I'd have never bought mine. Some people love them, but not me!!

It is not a matter or metal or not but you DO NOT want to use a follower with no front skirt like the Metalform or McCormick on the lower right column.

Metal is fine as long as it has a skirt.

With a follower with no skirt the follower will jump the mag and hit the feed ramp of a aluminum 1911 causing gouges.

i have no issues with Metalform non skirted metal followers tilting forward hitting the feed ramp as long as you make sure the back of the follower is secured by the mag spring by at least two coils.

Which is why I would just recommend mags without metal followers for an AL frame gun.

The ones with metal skirts are perfectly fine.

you should NOT use the mags that your 1911 does not like

...as not all brands of mags perform the same or as well/bad in all 1911s

The newer CMC Power+ magazines have skirts.

I bought one right after they came out because I got curious about their new "anti-tilt" follower design. It's not a skirt like you see on the wilsons or tripps, but it's there. Definitely doesn't let the rounds nose-down like the old follower would if you let it. I can't imagine how the new follower design would gouge the feed ramp.

I'm really impressed with it. Zero feeding issues (but I never had any problems with the others, either)

Well, here are a couple pictures I took to illustrate the difference.

With the old CMC PowerMags, as rounds were stripped from the magazine, the follower would kind of float forward in the tube, and you can end up with a situation like picture below where the follower's sitting on the feed ramp.

The improved follower design of the Power+ magazines keeps that from happening, I've tried to physically push it forward in the tube, and it's just not going to move fore and aft like the old ones. The way this follower is designed, I can't think of a way in normal use that it'd touch the feed ramp at all.

Also, there's cat fur in the grease on my slide rails.

I didn't even clean it off when I put it together. So there.

I just can't imagine how it'd gall the feed ramp like some other magazines can.

You're gonna end up with a whole boatload of magazines anyway. It won't hurt to buy one and take the slide off, then put it in the frame and try to make it touch the feed ramp that way. You'll see that it can't really happen.

Wilsons are skirted with plastic followers, and should be fine. See the picture posted above with all the different followers listed.
