We all hear the word "tactical" used for knives, flashlights, guns, equipment, gear etc etc.

What does something have to be in order to be considered "tactical?"

    The color black?
    Silent?
    Laser/lights?
    Size as big or small?
Used by the military or Special OPS?

    Let's hear from you.

    Very funny pic above but...

What is "tactical" in regards to equipment?
It's almost an unanswerable question. Try to answer it.

Tactical? Painted black, over priced and for sale on a table between the beef jerky and stun guns.

I need something crenelated on my flashlight, but I'm 290 lbs. and can't swing my arm that hard or fast to actually use it. And, I would probably fall down screaming first.

And I need many flashing modes, to shine once or twice against the wall and never use again.

    But it's tactical.

    Therefore, I need it.

Usually, non reflective, dark colored, or camo, and mainly intended to be used in a defensive situation.

So maybe nothing (noun) is "tactical" It's merely a state of mind.

Basically, having what is needed to acheive an end result or means to an end?

Tactical refers to the tactics used to achieve a strategic goal.

For example, if your goal is to look cool one tactic is to get an everyday object in black with serrations and a rail to mount a light or a laser.

A device designed for for a specific tactic or set of tactics.

Unfortunately, any definition beyond black/pointy/fde/railed/flashing seems to have slipped the mind of most manufacturers.

"Tactical refers to the tactics used to achieve a strategic goal."

This ^ sounds about right. I suppose if you had to infiltrate a warehouse for drugs and the entire place (walls/ceiling etc) was pink, a pink pistol and pink BDUs would be the correct tactic to choose to get the job done.

The pistol and uniform in this case could be considered "tactical"

Only thing "Tactical" I own. I didn't buy it because it says "Tactical" but in spite of it. Sure shoots good though.

To me tactical means something is made to fit specific needs/tactics of the military, as well as para-military groups like SWAT. For instance, a knife might have a plastic handle instead of wood and a coated blade to make it less prone to rust. In practice I ignore the word in a product description as it means so little.
