    Hi folks.

    I have a Westernfield M550A 12GA that needs a new barrel. Will a Mossberg 500 barrel work?

    Thanks

  2. I wish I could help but Western Field was just the name Montgomery Wards used to sell guns under.

These guns were made by a variety of subcontractors to Monkey Wards specs and unless you know who the actual maker of your model gun was and what the manufacturers model it was that Monkey Wards was selling as a M550A there's no way of knowing what's gonna interchange if anything. I'm pretty sure you're right about it being a Mossberg but whether or not the barrel is identical to a Mossberg 500 is tough to say. Probably so as I doubt they would have made some sort of proprietary barrel just for Monkey Wards.

Some pics of the barrel might help in determing if it's the same.

I doubt if there's a whole lot of Western Field owners out there anymore who could tell you right off the top of their head if it's gonna work.

Has a Mossberg style safety on top. Sorry about the low-res camera phone pics. These are all I have on this comp.

  4. I was thinking more along the lines of the barrel itself and more specifically the mounting tang.

I could compare it with the barrel on my 500A and see if they look similiar.

That's a nice looking shotgun by the way. ;)

Looks a lot like your typical run of the mill Mossberg to me but barrel pics should make it more clear. Just curious, why does it need a new barrel?

It appears that the PD it came from had it cut down to fit in a cruiser. When they did, they cut it a hair under 18 inches. In order for me to put it in service and reassemble it, I need a legal length barrel or a tax stamp. I don't want to waste $200 when I can spend $85 and have a new barrel.

Its depressing to see it disassembled and I want to go shoot it!

I contacted Mossberg without a response. I'm not sitting on hold for an hour.

  9. Gunparts Corp.'s (Numrich Arms) catalog #26 cross-reference does show the Western Field 550A to be the Mossberg 500A. (The "A" in Mossberg nomenclature simply denotes 12 gauge).

That was my VERY FIRST GUN... fugly as it was. Sawn off barrel to 18", and the stock cut off square to make a pistol grip. All black.

I had a "Coast to Coast" shotgun that looks exactly like yours, and also with a cut down barrel. After some research, I ordered a replacement Mossberg 500 barrel from Brownells and it worked perfectly.

According to the info on this page, it will fit.
This is a very handy page to have earmarked.
    Hope this helps.

I have a Westernfield too. Same model as yours. I don't know if the Mossberg barrel will work, but my Westernfield firing pin broke and I replaced it with one from a Mossberg 500 12 guage. The shotgun now works fine.
