shop around on ebay. Easiest thing to do is, go to a major retailer like Best Buy, Circuit city, whatever. Find what you want. Find the item #, highlight and copy it. Then paste it into the search field on ebay. That will bring up exactly what you want and you can compare prices that people are selling them for. Do not forget to add in shipping to the cost.

Does he specifically want an iPod, or just an MP3 player. I am hoping to get an MP3 player for christmas. I did a lot of research and have found out that the Creative Zen series is really good. It costs less, has more features, better software, and in many cases holds more. I have ready many articles saying it "out iPods an iPod".

But, if he specifically wants an iPod, better get him what he wants.

  3. Apple controls the price of them. There really isn't much if any discount on new ones, reguardless who sells them.

This has been my experience too. Unless you are getting a used one from e-bay, I don't think you are going to get much lower than the MSRP you see in Apple stores and everywhere else.
While there are lots of other MP3 players out there, the click wheel control interface is what makes the Ipod a killer app. I don't own one yet, but I think I might get a 4GB Nano one of these days. In addition the wheel and color screen, there isn't another player that can beat it's size to capacity ratio. I was thinking of getting the 30gb Ipod video for more capactiy, I recently got Satellite radio which is bascially an infinite source of music, so I think I'll favor the Nano's "don't even feel it" tinyness.
