Went with Mossberg over Remington for my new shotgun

Way over a year ago I decided to sell an old beat up 12 gauge Winchester 1300 defender I had bought used for a good price and pick up a new Remington 870 .20 gauge for our home defense shotgun. My wife was not a fan of the 12 gauge so I figured it would be best to get something she enjoyed shooting. I have been happy with the 870 but have had an itch for a 12 gauge for myself so I started looking around Christmas. Went back to the gun shop today and brought home a Mossberg 590 with ghost ring sights. I really liked the 870 tactical I handled but decided to go with the Mossberg. It was cheaper than the 870, and the front sight on the 870 fell off when the guy pulled it out of the box. I figure that was a sign to help me on my decision lol. After I take it down to the farm and break it in I might add a KNOXX stock to it. Excited to try it out!

Watch out for "cheek slap" from the Knoxx stock. Mine almost broke my cheek bone. I have a Hogue Overmolded 12" LOP stock on my 870 now. I sure don't blame you for not buying the Remington. Although I much prefer Remington over Mossberg, I'm with you that the sight falling off was a bad sign.

Cheeck slap is a shooter error. Shoot the SpecOps correctly and there are no issues. For the correct way to shoot this stock go to and click on the red link "Breaking in the 870" scroll down to the read on "recoil reducing stocks".

Lol, having dual extractors, non spring loaded shell elevator, slide release behind the trigger guard, and an ambi safety is always a bad thing to have.:tongueout:

Congrats bro hope you love your Mossberg as much as I love mine.

And I'm not anti Remington , not at all. I have a Remington 597 that I decided to make a personal questing project out of and not only did I drop a bunch of time and money on it , I even just spray painted it in what can only be called Scrap-style o flauge ... And I also have a Bushmaster AR ( same company parent as Remington). I just would like to think I'm smart enough to make informed decisions and opinions on each thing I buy without blindly applying brand loyalty or long time market generalizations. Nothing wrong with an 870 et al. But I love my Mossberg for sure. Hope you do too.

I have all Remingtons for my bird guns and got my first Mossberg 2 weeks ago for my HD gun and absolutely love it,,Its just the fact that I can load shells without the lifter digging into my thumb has me sold on the Mossberg line MUCH better design, My next bird gun purchase is defiantly going to be another Mossberg

We have Remingtons at work and I love them. But the spring loaded shell elevator does get old real quick during tactical courses of fire when you are running & gunning and your finger gets snagged! ouch!!!!

    Dual extractors RULE!!!

  12. I am a Mossberg convert myself. The 870 is a great firearm, I just happen to like how everything is layed out on the 500/590. All of this being said, AI&P Tactical is re-doing an old Wingmaster for me, it's tough to dislike either for anything at all.

I used to be a Remington only guy----but these days a low end Mossberg is better than a low end Remington----for less money.

Now a 590A1 vs a 870 Police is pretty much even.

Nice-ambidextrous safety, slide release can be activated from a firing grip, loading gate isn't in the way of the mag tube with the action closed, 6 shot sidesaddle vs 4 shot for the Remmy, dual extractors vs one...I can see why someone would like those qualities in a fighting shotgun.

I like the 1300... and the 870... and the 500/590. Of them all, the Mossberg arguably has the best feature set of controls (mentioned by others above), but lacks the 7-shot, one-piece mag tube on an 18" gun as the 1300 Defender does. If the 18.5" Mossberg 500 had a one piece 7-shot mag tube (as the 1300 Defender does) it would RULE the defensive shotgun roost - in my view.

My 8-shot 18" Winchester 1300 is my primary defense shotgun.

My Mossberg 500 Persuader is my all-around, multi-purpose, knock around shotgun.

My 870 Police Models with their gorgeous walnut furniture are my admired safe queens.

I own both also. The Mossberg for HD and I hunt with the 870.
