Alcubierre's warp drive theory has been around since 1994. I don't think most physicists take him seriously. Maybe one of our resident physicists can explain why. I'd like it to be true but even if the math works we have no idea how to build someting based on it.

I heard the Brady Campaign is trying to get Congress to close the Space/Time loophole.

    seriously though...

    Cool article!

The article says that they think it could be powered by a mass of something the size of the Voyager 1 probe, but that is incredibly decpetive. The make it sound like Voyager 1 could power it, but what they really mean is if the mass of Voyager 1 were completely converted to energy with 100% efficiency at the rate of e=mc^2 then you might be able to power the drive for a relatively short hop. In other words, the equivalent energy output of thousands (if not millions) of nuclear bombs.

See... that's way cooler looking than what the article is talking about...

Fact is, they are all just 3 inch models. . They just look bigger on the TV screen.

You better pray the inertia dampener remains online and functional.

Why is it that you have to use donuts and footballs to explain physics to an average American? :dunno:

It was little more than a thought experiment by Alcubierre. His calculations required so much energy that you would have to convert Jupiter's mass into energy to get it to work.

It was an interesting proof of concept.

Can you get by with something the size of Pluto? Since we demoted it to non-planet anyway, we might as well use it for experiments.

That was kind of the point of the article. They now think they only need a mass equivalent to about a car in size. Of course, converting even that amount of mass to pure energy would be like trying to control thousands upon thousands of nuclear bombs detonating all at once.

Look at all the things we have today that were dreams 40-50 years ago. It can happen, if we don't kill ourselves in the meantime.

It is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light.

Unless you are gas escaping from TBO's 6

The theory has merit but until we can hold an EXTREMELY large exploding hydrogen bomb in a bottle to use as a battery we will not be able to test the theory. Even the largest H-bombs only convert a few grams of matter into energy so convert the mass of the Voyageur craft is going to pose quite an engineering challenge.

Well, if we could do it and did travel that fast, and then came back to earth- let's say one year later according to our clock on the spaceship- the people who sent us would be long dead. You can thank time dilation for that.
