Was all set to buy a PK 380 for my wife tonight and then realized how hard the double action pull would be for her (both too stiff and too long). How much can those be worked on and how much do they loosen up with use?

There's not a lot you can do without major bucks getting involved. The long transfer bar and heavy springs are the majority of the problem.

Define "major" and who could do it reliably?

Major in this case is 3-4 hours of shop time $180+. Try Cylinder and Slide.
