Is there anyway to use a drive that already has an operating system on it with VMware. I was looking at the docs and noticed that you can start with a fresh drive, but I didn't see any mention about one that already has an OS on it. I'm trying to help a guy I know.

Yes and no. I've done it, but even if the drive was used in the same computer, when you put it in VMWare, it's like it's using a whole new motherboard, because all of the components are virtualized software copies of real hardware products, and probably not the ones you have in the system the drive was using.

If you just want to use the data on the drive, then set it up, then reinstall Windows or whatever other OS you want. If it's Windows, install to a different directory than the default to save yourself a lot of trouble.

If you actually want to use the OS installation already on the drive, then good luck -- you should be able to do it, but it may be a long hard fight to get the drivers and other details worked out.
