looks like the federal ammo was the best in this test.

Fastest and most energetic, but also the widest velocity variation.

Those are the fastest numbers I've seen for the Federal load. At 1220-1250 fps I'll take that. Even though the Cor-Bon stuff is spec'd at 1325fps, seems like more people chrono the load at 1250-1280fps. Just marginally faster than this Federal load, but the Federal load uses a better bullet in the HST design.

Has anyone tested the WWB and UMC stuff for penetration/expansion? The velocity numbers look decent.

The Federal ammo was 135 gr. and the others 180 gr. ammo. That's why Remington and WWB were slower fps.

The few tests I've seen of the WWB stuff were not good expansions.

SD ammo is no place to scrimp. It's not like you have to shoot thousands of rounds of it.

    I agree.

If you really need a good defensive load on the cheap though, that Federal stuff is the best you are going to get.

I don't think the Federal load is really cheap. It is an HST bullet and still $23 a box. That's roughly the same as Tactical HST online.

The penetration of the federal round is around 11" if im not mistaken. I havent seen any tests of the wwb 180gr for penetration except one and if i remember right the pen. was like 20" and no expansion, if anyone has a link to wwb or remington pen. test throw it up please. Thnks for that post DJ NINER, was wondering about vel. of the wwb. I have a few boxes of both and a couple boxes of federal 180 HST'S which i prefer.

Anyone know if the WWB in .40SW uses the uncolored SilverTip bullets like the 9mm?

Also, I was suprised to see the velocity on the Federal. Not trying to make a 9mm vs .40 discussion, but the 9mm can quite easily push a bullet 8 grains lighter at the same velocity. I understand that the .40 wasnt up to full potential, just thought it was interesting.

From what I've seen, yes. The WWB bullet is the same as the silver tip minus the silver.

Most 124+P loads will run around around 1200fps. Not much lighter or slower than the 40 round. The 40 round still has a slight edge in weight and velocity, but the 9mm will have better sd. I don't think I'd hesitate to use the federal load in my G23. If Federal loaded this round to 1275 fps I think they'd have a winner on their hands if they could keep penetration at 10+ inches.

IIRC the 127 Ranger Load runs just over 1250 from a Glock 19. But I agree, most 124 +P do typically run in the low 1200s.

I am considering getting a G23 so this is pretty interesting to me.
