Tests by National Institute of Justice indicate that older vests made of Kevlar and Twaron retain their capabilities IF they've been properly stored and not used. Exposure to sunlight, condensation, petroleum products, bleach, or dry cleaning fluids other than perchlorethylene can degrade their ballistic protection capabilities, however.
