I have a Micro$oft optical trackball. Probably four or five years old.

I also have about a two month old Toshiba notebook running Win XP Pro.

I have had an error pop up that the trackball is not recognized and the USB ports appear dead quite a few times. Sometimes all I have to do is unplug and replug and the trackball is recognized. Occasionally I have to reboot to get it to work. Yesterday, I couldn't get it to work at all. Today, it had power but wasn't recognized. Rebooted and no problems.

I also have a USB printer that has never once gave a problem. This leads me to believe the problem is in the trackball.

I am thinking the connector on the trackball is going bad? Is that likely? Or would it be the cord? How hard is it to repair either?

I haven't looked but they probably don't sell my trackball anymore so I don't want to loose it as I love it.

What protocol does it use? USB1.1 or 2.0? How long is the cord? Would you have any reason to suspect the cord is damaged? Did you try it in other systems?

    USB 1.0

I haven't tried it on any other systems...that never dawned on me ;g

Several years ago I tried it on a Dell but it conflicted.

Cord is over 6 ft and it is bundled up. I was wondering if it had gotten in a bind...
