Is there any US Navy Carrier apes out here?

I was on the USS Constellation CV-64 from 1986-1989.

USS Peleliu LHA-5 1990-1993(if you consider it a "Carrier")

I was not a deck ape but nonetheless a "Flattop sailor".

I served 20 full duty active years and damn proud of it.

yes, yes we did! I know exactly where you are talking about. I also don't suppose your remember the name of the mall downtown San Diego? I remember missing home, and going there and watching movies all day.

Those were some good times. I was on the Connie for 3 years, did two west pac's then transfered to ADAK AK. I went to radioman A school also in San Diego.

Spent three years of my life there, and enjoyed them all!

YES YES, that is it....Horton Plaza! I just called a friend of mine in San Dog, and he confirmed this also. Man those were great times...Standing out on the "GRINDER" holding that M-1 Garand that weighed in at 95lbs, sunburned foreheads, and a BM1 that I think did not like polish people! HAHAHAHA

Hey SwampDruid, were you there when one of Heavy 5s RA-5Cs was stripped for corrosion control, with nothin' on it but a coat of zinc chromate, and someone stenciled "MELLOW YELLOW" on it?

    To VA27

About the only thing I can recall about the RA5s was 2 of our F4's were supposed to fly escort for an A5 "photo shoot" across most of NVN. The A5 pilot told our F4 guys something to the effect "I'm going in in afterburner and will be over NVN for about 90 seconds. You guys head south feet wet and I'll meet you south of the DMZ." He did just that. He beat our guys to the DMZ. The A5s may not have been too pretty on the flight deck, but stripped slick like they were those babies could FLY FAST.

Oh, yeah, I remember I almost crapped my pants the first time I saw an A5 dump fuel on approach and the dumped fuel lit off. A sight to see. Got to be a commonplace occurrence.

Edited to add.....The A5 took a full load of fuel before starting his run and had to take on fuel after to make it back to the Connie.
