Some might call this a fail for partial jacket gnarlyness, but I say it's still 10mm love. 9" of permanent stretch cavity that you can see through, OH YA!

I think the 155/165gr Gold Dots hold up better at 10mm velocities. If I were to carry a higher grain bullet for defense, I'd handload some 175gr Silvertips.

Did he only do the test once? I'd think doing several would be a better predictor of performance.

Ya, for the most part, he does one shot into the block, then melts it down and reforms for the next test.

TNOD9 goes into the parameters of the coming repeat of the test. He even states the separation of the jacket from the projectile is a failure of the round. I believe the next test is going to be a water jug test. I am also sure he will repeat the gel test.

I have been watching his channel since 2008, and he is very thorough on his testing.

But, Man! The test? Who cares in this case, imagine getting hit with that 10mm round (separation or not)? :wow:

Great video. High quality, and well narrated.

No doubt that shows pretty darned impressive terminal effects. It gives me a little pause to wonder if the bullet would survive intact if called on to penetrate an intermediate barrier.

That is the primary reason I have not been super keen on 180 gr GDHPs for top 10mm velocities. I wouldn't necessarily feel under-gunned with it though. I personally prefer a 165 GDHP at 1335 fps.

Wish he'd used Underwood's 180gr Hornady XTP 10mm rounds. The issue with Gold Dots in 10mm was uncovered by 'turbonatr' back in 2005, about seven years ago.

The 180gr XTP is rated to 1500 ft/s.

I am thinking 200gr HST or T-series would be an interesting load.

Had read about 180 Gold Dot overexpansion issue at velocities higher than 1200 fps so I have loaded my urban defense ammo w. this bullet to approx 1180-1200 fps.
Comparing this with 40SW 180gr defence rounds (e.g. Speer) at approx. 1000fps it's still way enough for 2-legged attackers.

Not as pretty a video but 180 gr XTP at about the same velocity as Underwood:
