Ruger,S&W,any of these 2 will do you well. Even S&Ws with the ugly lock will do. So far my 2 S&Ws M64 2 inch and 681 4 inch are all doing well. also my 686+ 3+4 inch with lock is fine. My Rugers are a SPEED SIX in .357/.38 and also my SP101 in .357/38. Since I am disabled,I sold all of my Glocks because it is hard for me to load up.

  4. I guess I need it explained to me? As far as single actions go I would have thought a Stainless Blackhawk convertible in .38/.357/9mm would give you quite a bit of versatility. Especially when trying to scrounge ammo. Obviously not the same category of big game stopper but then I would go .44 mag anyway.

    Oh, USA
Nothing wrong with a good K frame, except for those awful factory grips. :)

  6. i too have a smith 19 4" in .357mag and its a great gun. i have recently found new respect for the wheel gun and .357mag. for all around use, its almost a hard choice between it an my glock 17 for a one and only type of decision. luckily im dont have to make it right now.

I don't know about that. Modern autos run well with minimal care. And while I've seen way more malfunctions with autos than revolvers, most could be cleared in seconds. When revolvers go down they do it hard. Dirty revolvers can lock up. Recently a guy shooting quality SD ammo had a bullet jump the crimp and lock up his gun. He could not clear it with any tools he had on hand. And those wheel guns are complicated to work on too.

Anyway I though a dissenting opinion might stir things up.

There really isn't much that a .357 has over a handloaded .44 Special (and I am a big .357 fan but..) For instance on blacktail deer the 250 KSWC at 1,000-1,100 fps does all the damage of the .357 at full throttle. On larger game with the .357 you need to make a choice, do you want a bigger hole (expansion) or deeper wound (penetration)? With the .44 Special handloaded you get both and you can anneal just the tip if a KSWC to get a bit of expansion over its nominal .429 if you want.

OTOH the same bullet, if it doesn't meet enough resistance, as on small game like rabbit, will simple punch a .429 hole in and out and you can "eat right up to the hole" with very little bloodshot meat.

I've got a 686 Smith & Wesson with 3 inch barrel. Haven't fired it in 20 years. It is a fine revolver. Always was reliable and an excellent choice for defense. Do like my Glock 19 alot though.

Does it say CS-1 on the yoke? If so it may be quite valuable.

You haven't shot the right 357 loads.
187gr cast fn at 1500+ will shoot much flatter and will kill elk and deer very quick and will do 5.5'' at 200 yd.

I would not shoot at a deer or elk at that range unless I was
    starving.

I have many guns and calibers but my #1 is the little 357/9mm
ss BH 6.5'', love it so much I have 6 of that mod. two for each
    family member.
