    Where you live
    I have a '79 dodge van chassis with 440 and 727.

It has the long tranny dipstick tube that you can check under the hood. I would like to repplace that with a shorty version. the kind you have to check under the doghouse.

I found the dipstick and tube at the junkyard.

It seems to just pull out and then press in. Simple enough.

My question is...do I need to drain the tranny?

I dont want to pull the old tube and have fluid pour out of the hole.

I would be careful about talking about a long tranny dipstick, much less draining it.

Nope, you don't need to drain it. You may get a bit of spillage if your transmission is overfilled, but it isn't going to shoot out.
