Why are swamp coolers so expensive? $600 for some sheet metal? You can buy all of the parts but the frame for ~$150, that sheet metal cannot be worth that much. Can you order them online somewhere? I could not find any. They don't last on craigslist at all. Have not been able to catch one.

They cost that much because people will pay that much.

Everything else is a distracting detail.

In a functioning capitalist economy someone would start making them at a lower cost. I would really like one to save on the electric bill but $600 is just stupid.

I built one for a small greenhouse (orchids, not dope - sorry guys.). It was a roll of spanish moss (?), five gallon buckets, toilet tank plumbing, fish pond pump, a few feet of roof gutter, garden hose and a cheap box fan.

It worked very well, even in south east Texas. We would just sit in there on really hot days. Swamp coolers work exceptionally well in places with very low humidity.

In western Colorado swamp coolers work very well when the humidity is down low ..... People here complain when the humidity goes above 12-14 percent.......

I can't imagine a swamp cooler "working" in SE Texas....:dunno:

No sense in making one at a lower cost when they sell just fine at the cost they're at now.
