I had finally decided on the STI Ranger 11 but when I went to order it (which is a 16 to 20 week wait time), I came across an STI Tactical 4.15 that was in stock. I really liked the gun but would like opinions as to it being worth spending the extra $800 on it.

They are pretty different pistols. The Ranger II is more traditional 1911 pattern with a single stack mag. The Tactical has a polymer frame double stack mag and a light rail. For range, home defense, competiton, or duty use the 2011 series may be more suited. For concealed carry and traditional look and feel, go with the Ranger II.

I want a 2011 model at some point, but for now I am happy with my pair of Ranger IIs. PS - if you don't want to wait 16-20 weeks, try gunbroker. I bought three of my four STIs locally, but I didn't want a long wait for the last one and went through gunbroker.

    The Tacticals are nice.

I have one in 9x19 that I had built about 3 years ago. Runs great. No issues, at all. I had standard Heinie slant pros on there but I had Pistolwrench swap them out to his Tier One sights so I can see over the top of my suppressor.

Right now I have another slide and frame on order and I am going to build up another in 40.

They are a completely different gun! That being said, I love everything STI is making short of the GP6 and LS9. The Ranger would be an awesome carry gun, the Tac would be sweet for the range and could be carried if the magwell was removed

the Tactical is a nice gun, however the mags will most likely need tuning. the 6 factory mags i got for my STI Edge needed tuning, so another $100 for the Dawson 2011 mag tuning kit.
