Steel Casings vs Brass Casings

Discussion in 'GATE AR-15 Forum' started by obiestreasures, Jul 8, 2010.

  1. I like to use ammo with brass casings all the time but one of my friends gave me a few boxes of 223 and 5.56 ammo with steel casings and Iam not to fond of using this ammo in my stag AR15. I have never shot any ammo with steel casings out of my stag yet and was wondering what you thing of using this cheaper ammo in the AR?
    Thank You

A nitro-carburized or chromelined barrel would be fine for shooting the cheap stuff, if it is corrosive you need to wash it out including the trigger and BCG with soap and water after but other than that we have had no problems.
I don't think I would use it in stainless barrels, even though the steel cases are soft steel they can scratch the chamber.
