I rented a car in Phoenix last month, and when I picked it up noticed it had Hawaii plates on it, and it had Hawaii registration in the glove box. How does this occur? BTW, the muffler on the Patriot Jeep was rusty. Maybe from the trip across the pond?

Rental companies move cars all the time. In the past they did not charge for one way drop off. now if you do a 1 way, it can be 4-500 dollars extra. If they don;t charge, they will have too many cars in one spot, say Las Vegas were lots of Cali cars show up.

I think the question is more in line with. (Who rents a car form HAWAII to mainland) :) :)

Getting a rental with another (lower 48 lic) is not strange. I agree I would do double take on that car.
I do see HI plates at my inlaws. There is a detailer who (for some reason) gets business from islands. Hi end cars. They ship them over for him to detail, fix every little scratch, dent, new windows, clean headlights, replace stuff. They come out in real showroom condition. Then are shipped back.
He has one customer who's wife can't drive/park. Dings, dents all over. Still cheaper then buying her a new car every yr.....

That company is in biiiig trouble. You've just stumbled onto proof of the underwater tunnel that we built in the cold war from Hawaii to Seattle.

That's the same tunnel that those Hawiians use to sneak into this country and steal our jobs.

While car shopping a few years ago I found an interesting S10 Blazer on a dealer's lot in KY. Ran the Carfax when I got home. It had been a rental in Hawaii.

There are THOUSANDS of rental cars in HI...

Perhaps that particular one was part of an order due a perceived high demand.

Demand was either met or never materialized...so the vehicle was transferred to the mainland.

    Maybe?

I asked about a plate once when renting. the counter guy said the company spreads out the registrations so that each state they operate in gets some.

I do know that military servicemen can register their car in any state they want. Maybe that has something to do with it.

You joke but there are people who will buy it.

In Santa Cruz some locals when asked "what's that" in reference to Monterey on the other side of the Monterey Bay will answer "Hawaii."

People have actually responded with "really." As if had they known they would have bought tickets for the ferry and planned to spend more than a day in Santa Cruz.

The people who fall for it are people whose concept of oceans is limited due to excessive amounts of amber waves of grain.
