Be comfortable with standard pressure, feel free to go to +P when you find it. +P give a little edge but youre not inadequately served with standard. Don
Thanks guys. I shoot what I bought well. Next time I get some I'll try to get short barrel. Expensive getting a new gun especially when it's a new caliber!
It's fun to compare ballistics.
And easy to rationalize +P giving back the velocity lost from a short barrel.
But truth is you need to carry what you shoot the best.
High quality SD ammo that's proven reliable in your gun.
And you can reliably, under extreme stress, hit your target. The first time and with follow up shots.
Only you and your weapon can determine that.
Good Luck.
Standard is fine. honestly I don't even mess with the + stuff just not any real need IMO. that said there is nothing "wrong" with +P but I don't "need" it. I think ive had a box of it once and that's now lol. and that's only because back when you could really find very little it was time to change carry ammo(I do this every 5 years if I need it or not just for peace of mind) when I did all I could find was +p stuff so that's what I have..but when I change again I wont look for it again probably go back to regular old gold dots like I was running...the current stuff is the Hornady Critical Duty stuff.
I load my CM9 and G26 with 124 +P Gold Dots or PDX1. I would use the short barrel Gold Dots but haven't found any. Some bullets don't expand reliably at the lower velocities from short barrels. Seems to be more of an issue with .45 for some reason, and supposedly pretty uncommon with most modern SD loads. Still, I use +P to be on the safe side. Full size handguns I still prefer +P, but if I'm having trouble finding it I'll load the full size with standard pressure and save the +P for the compacts.
I have owned a CM9 for over a year, and ran a lot of +P rounds through it, testing it for the perfect carry load. Your standard pressure Gold Dots are more than adequate. I however, run +P pure copper Corbon DPX's through mine and it eats them up very well along with every other high and low pressure ammo that I have tried. The CM9 is a great gun that will run basically whatever you feed it very well!
IMO with todays ammo selection. (federal hst, winch. ranger etc.) i dont think +p is a necessity. i dont use it in any of my carry guns. even full size. again IMO its "harder" to manage the baby guns in general and i find the +p loads to magnify that effect. a proper self defense round in standard pressure will be more than adequate.
The search for the best ammo for any gun is a worthy one. I'd say you're going to be all right with the standard pressure 124-grain Gold Dot, but when you have the chance to pick a +P or Short Barrel version go right ahead. After you've tested them all you'll have your own choice to make.
As for standard pressure, take a look at tnoutdoors' results for the [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2s82NCLKQI"]115-grain Gold Dot.[/ame] They certainly performed very well in this test.
Standard pressure is fine. +P in a short barrel 9mm is like .357 in a J-frame revolver. A lot more flash and recoil for not much velocity gain.
I am much more concerned about followup shot accuracy than I am about getting a bit more velocity out of a bullet. Gold Dots expand nicely when driven at standard pressure.
If you want maximum expansion consider switching to Federal HST. Gold Dots are better at staying intact when penetrating auto-glass which makes them a better choice for cops. HST expand a bit more and at lower velocities so that is my preferred choice.
Looks like the only thing they have in stock at the moment is standard velocity Gold Dot ammo. I would feel well served by carrying this ammo in my G26.

Thanks for the link! Good prices. HST looks good. I'd like to try them out eventually

Found some 124 g +P Gold Dots. Going to try them out in the CM9. Hope the recoil isn't too great
