I recently bought a used Springfield Armory GI .45 and have only shot FMJ through it. Are there any issues using hollow points in them like the original 1911/ 1911A1? Does anyone have first hand experience shooting hollow points through a SA GI .45? Thanks in advance.

Mine worked 100% with good magazines and Ranger 230 grain HPs

You should be fine with most 230 and 185 grain loadings. 200gr Gold Dots are known to choke 1911's. The new Federal HST's feed exceptionally well in everything I have tried them in. As always, try a few small boxes before buying in quantity.

Yes, though you should check your gun for function.

I bought a new SS GI this past year and tested it with a large variety of ammo.
It fed and functioned with everything put to it. That includes lead wadcutters, and the wide 200 grain Speer hollow points, Golden Sabers, Noslers, and a bit of Winchester XST.

    Not one single malfunction.
That comes from these guns already being polished and throated.

Mine feeds hollowpoint just fine. For that matter it feeds just about anything fine. Wide variety of ammo through it...it just eats it.

My GI feeds Ranger really well. It choked occasionally on Gold Dots with the factory recoil spring. I initally got frustrated with its reliability. I changed the spring to an 18lb recoil spring, bought some new mags (Wilson 47D's and Metalform GI style mags), and started running grease on the slide rails, and it has fed everything I have tried since.

Mine is a range only toy so I dont worry too much about 100% reliability. Gold Dots and Rangers are the only HP's I have tried.

  7. This is the right answer to your question.
If it shoots whatever hollow points you want to use in it then simply make sure it does it reliably with the magazines you will use.
I would shoot at least a couple of boxes to be sure.
If it is a carry/ self defense weapon then you have to be confident in it.
If it isn't then it really doesn't matter.
