I'm no contractor, but I do carry a rifle and pistol for a living. I have put a lot of rounds downrange through my AK's, both in classes and on my own time. My experience is very different from his.

    IMO AK's are AK's.
Assuming we're talking about stock weapons and not CAI or other parts kit builds, they pretty well function and shoot the same. You can spend more for a nice Arsenal or Polytech milled gun, but aside from being stronger and heavier in the receiver, it's going to shoot just like any other AK.

I could see it if he said Yugo. or Bulgarian. A Romy would be fine as long as CAI kept their dirty hands off of it. It wouldn't be my first choice but maybe they know something I don't with their field experience.

I think Romania actually had a contract to make AKs for Iraqi police or security force or something like that. That's why they might be the best over there, because all the other ones are shot out.

That would make sense. Maybe with the mags too. Drag them through the desert and mountains for 30 years, and even AK's start to suffer.

I imagine they are more well made then the Romanian AK's we get in the states that are built as parts guns.

There is nothing wrong with Romanian AKs assuming a quality builder put them together and not the monkeys at CAI.

I've got 3 G kit builds and they've all been solid rifles and look as good as anything Arsenal puts out.

My SAR-1 also ran perfect, but was lacking in fit and finish.

I have a tale of two Romanian AKs. One perfect. The other like absolute garbage. Why? I never knew but the difference between the two was literally all pluses and the other all negatives / night & day.

That article had some questionable statements. One example.

Real Romanian AK or the craps parts kits that various US shops put out?

  12. The only bad AKs ive seen had been fondled by some baloonhead at Century. Romy or whatever they touch.

I'm just not sure how to take that article...

But I'm leaning in the Gecko45 direction.

Good article, Carlos. I agree with the author on AK sights:

'When it comes to AK sights, I stick to the iron ones and have avoided the temptation to throw a red dot on one thus far. Folks really have begun to shy away from a system that works every time in lieu of pretty optics. There’s still a place for iron sights (always will be) and I would suggest spending enough time with them to keep proficient.'

I found out, once I'd wasted a bit of cash on two different red dot sights (one decent, one not-so), is that the iron sights work just as well, at least for me.

Another thing that went through my mind is that, I have no doubt that the AK-examples those various 'contractors' have access to, outside of the States, are of much better quality than the inexpensive ones we see here in this country.

I have to agree with Berto, an AK is an AK. I have a CAI Yugo MB70, and it shoots as good as my Polytech and Norinco. You want a good AK get a Valmet in .223 but again its a high end AK and shoots as good as my other AK's.

The "tricked out" contractor ak with the Bushnell sight is painful to look at and I'm figuring it's not a joke. Sad that the Rommys are the best you can get a hold of. Iraq security forces did get a bunch of new Chinese aks dumped on them courtesy of uncle sam. Plenty of those are probably for sale somewhere.
