Well I guess the title is simple and to the point. I am building my first AR and on a budget as alot of people are. Was not really planning to build an AR right now, but got a good deal on a DPMS lower, a bushmaster parts kit and a DPMS stock. So now its time for a upper. Locally I can get a CMMG 14.5 inch Government Profile Upper Mid-Length for $400 and a 16" version for $450. Just wondering if it would be a good buy and if it is a quality piece or not.

The plans for the gun are to be a plinker and to be a short range gun that is easy to carry when out hunting long range coyotes with my Rem 700. So all thoughts are much appreciated, thanks!

You could probably find better quality for the money.

Does that $400 include the BCG and handguards?

Yup it does include the hand guards and if I understand correctly what a BCG is (bear with me i'm a little green on AR's), then yes, because it is ready to put on a lower and go shoot.

That seems like a decent price then. I had a 16" carbine and had no problems with it.

Back in the day CMMG used to be the "BCM" of its time.

    Good brand. Why not?

    If you like mid-lengths.

You know, police trade-in AR15 rifles (complete rifles) can be had for $600 if you keep your ear to the ground:tongueout:

Their quality is pretty good but their cs sucks. I now use Daniel Defense and Bravo Co..

How shot out are these Police trade-ins? I'm hoping they are because that says they were training properly.

CS is as important if not more so than anything. I'm guessing BCM and DD have good CS because their CS people get excited to hear a phone ring. It must get boring for them sitting and waiting. Their management probably has them doing medial tasks around the office to keep them busy.

CMMG has never been the "BCM" of any time period.

Well not in quality, but in popularity. I remember there used to be a buzz about CMMG but that buzz has long since died.

Well I ended up going with the CMMG upper, picked it up yesterday and it fits really nice on the DPMS lower I put together. Its a 16" stainless barrel and I added a carry handle, just going to run iron sights for now. Looks nice as a complete package. Let me know your thoughts.

This is my first AR and am VERY excited to finally have one of my own, never even shot one before, so it should be a blast to get on the range and see how it works.

    Outstanding deal for that upper.
CMMG had some quality control problems maybe 3 years ago that tainted their name. That's where negative comments come from.
My goto AR has a CMMG 14.5 upper. I have never had any problem.

I just mounted an Aimpoint in a Larue mount on a CMMG upper. The mount has some play in it while mounted on the upper. Something is out of spec. and I dont think its the mount. I doubt the upper is 3 y/o either considering it was just purchased.

Try tightening the bolt that holds your locking lever on.
