I have a new G26 and have used 115 gr. ammo at the range while practicing and getting used to the gun and have had no problems with the three different brands I've used.
I want to practice, then stock up on self defense ammo and I'm wondering if there is any self defense ammo that is optimized for the short (3.46 in.) barrel in the G26. I've heard (scuttlebutt) that 147 gr. is not efficient in short barrels.

Speer offers a short barrel load for the 9mm in their Gold Dot line, though to tell you the truth, I'm not sure that in 9mm Parabellum there's gonna be that much difference. 9mm is not as velocity sensitive as, say, .45 ACP as barrel length decreases. I load 127 grain Winchester Ranger-T +P+ in my Glock 26, with Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P as a close second choice, but any of the modern, premium high-tech hollow points should get you through the night.
