Got a 270 wsm need a scope, would like to keep it under $400.00 . I've narrowed it down to 3. Would like to use it for varmit, deer, and hogs. My choices are ; Leopold 3x9x50, zeiss conquest 3x9x40 , or nikon 4.5x14x40 with bullet drop compensater. So which would be better??? Thanx

what distance do you plan to hunt at? That would make a big factor and a varmint setup might not be great for a deer/hog setup.

I dont know about the scopes you mentioned, but I highly recommend you get a 30 MM tube instead of the 1 inch. It gathers way more light. All 3 are good companies, but it really depends on you. 50mm bell will let in more light also!

You have 3 good choices there. Of the 3 brands the only one I own is Leopold and I've been very happy with their scopes.

    Now for power choice.

You are looking for a one gun does all that means you have to compromise somewhere.

3x-9x is going to be about perfect for deer hunting ( I think a 2x-7x is perfect for deer), but you'll probably find the 9x a little wanting for small varmints at distance. The 4.5x-14x would be a bit better on the varmints, but the 40mm objective isn't going to gather light like the 50mm (although that really only comes into play with the higher power scope setting, either one on the lower power has plenty of exit pupil diameter) and 4.5x is going to limit your field of view if you jump a deer up close.

So my question is which do you hunt more? deer or varmints and which one are you willing to compromise the most on?

For me, I deer hunt more than varmint hunt so I'd probably go with the 3x-9x 50mm Leopold.
