I have the opportunity to buy an SP101 (.357)(2.25") for $275.00. Based on the serial number, it appears to be one from the first year of production. Current original owner says it has very few rounds through it and per my inspection, it looks it. It does have a scratch on it which is no big deal to me.
    Questions:
    1. Is there any issue with this gun being a first year production? In other words, did the early SP101s have any growing pains. Based on the low round count, it has not been tested much.
    2. Is this a good price? I can get a new one here for $455.00 plus tax.

If I recall, the early SP101 had some size limitations on cartridge length. It should be marked on the gun somewhere. Again, I don't remember exactly which models were these were.

    Price is excellent.

It's a good deal. The earliest SP's were in .38sp, then they chambered them to .357mag but limited to 125gr weights due to cylinder length, then finally to a proper .357mag length cylinder which will take the full spectrum of heavier 158gr-180+gr bullets.
If you're looking at a .357 chambered model, it's far from early production in the sp101 line.

I bought my Mom one for CC/HD a few years ago. It's the 2.25" w/CT grips. Shoots great. I just picked up one that's been customized by Gemini Custom, for myself today. Should be here late this week or early next week.

    That is an awesome price.

The first SP101 357 magnums had "125 gr Only" written on the barrel.

The SP101 is a fine revolver. Mine shoots 357 magnums to point of aim with 158 gr rounds.

Update: I bought it after trying it out today. It is a really nice revolver. For clarification, it is not as early model that I thought it was. I misread the serial number. It was born in early 1993, per Ruger, so I guess it is a relatively early .357. It is not limited to the maximum of 125 grain bullets.
I sincerely thank those that respsonded. Your respsonses made it easy to go for it. Gonna go clean it real good soon.

I'm pretty sure the SP101 was a 357 from the beginning. 38Spl models and 9mm followed for markets that wanted those specific calibers like LEA for backup use etc.

The gun came out in 1989 as a .38sp. By 1990, a few gunsmiths were converting it to .357mag at the requests of a few gun writers. Not much later, the gun was chambered for 125gr .357mag by the factory, then all bullet weights later yet.
