Anyone have a Ruger 77 Compact. How's the fit and finish compared to others? How does it shoot? It's light weight is appealing.

My gunsmith had one with a laminated stock, he skeletonized the stock and took all the weight he could off the metal parts... great little gun.

think with scope on it he had the thing under 5 lbs

I've handled one, and the fit/finish seems to be the same as a 77, but I don't know about shooting one, this was in a gunshop.

Thanks. That's quite a weight reduction. I think I would want it in walnut if I got one, just because I like the wood. 6 1/2 - 7 lbs with scope is okay.

    Anyone else?

Does the compact come in 30-06? A <5 lb 30-06 w/optics sounds wonderful! Then again, I always was a glutton for punishment;)
Seriously, I'd love to have a 06' that was that light. What a pleasure to carry it must be.

There are four short action calibers for the M77 Mark II Compact --- .223, .243, .260 and .308. The barrel and walnut stock are both shortened compared to the M77 Mark II Standard, but built on the same short action. The barrel is a mere 16 1/2 inches.

I went by Oshman's today to look at one and they don't carry them at all and can't even order them. The guy described them as "youth" or "women's" rifles, "not regular ones." While I am sure they would be fine for both, I like the idea of not lugging more weight than I need to.

I would really like to hear from someone who has some experience with one of these rifles. May not happen here, I guess.

My wife has a Ruger compact in 260.The fit and finish is excellent. The gun handles and balances well too.It shoots 1.25 inch groups with handloads and groups of around 1.75 inches with factory loads. It shoots the 140 grain noslers the best, but handloads with 129 grain hornady bullets shoot well too.Very nice rifle,I plan on buying another one in 223 for myself.I have a buddy who has one in 223 and it shoots real well too.
