A Cherry Point marine is dead after trying to save two boys from strong currents on Saturday.

Cherry Point Msgt. Michael Wert drowned while trying to save two boys, 10 and 12, caught in deep water at the Fort Macon State Park beach.

The Division of Parks and Recreation tells us Wert was able to get the boys to safety only to find himself caught in the current.

Wert's 15-year-old daughter helped pull the boys the rest of the way out of the water.

Atlantic Beach EMS and park rangers responded.

Wert leaves behind a wife and two kids.
