rem 1100 2 3/4 to 3 in

    i have a Rem 1100 i bought new in 1975, it came with a barrel chambered in 2 3/4 in, i have seen barrels forsale chambered for 3 in. can i buy one and safely use it ?:embarassed:

    Yes you can. 3" barrels will fit 2 3/4" receivers. No worries at all and there are lots of people who do that. Remington even condones the practice so have no fear.

    It will fit, but it will not cycle properly.
    Will be over gassed,........will beat the HEJJ out of the buffer!

    3" shell will fit in a 2 3/4" chamber, still not supposed to do it either.

    Read over several Remington documents and they all say NOT to use any other than 2 3/4" shells in standard receivers.

    Sure as HEJJ shouldn't do it with a non magnum receiver 870 either!

    Some VERY bad advice being thrown around here!


    Well, for starters, here's what Remington has to say about it:

    "NOTE: Model 870 Extra Barrels with 3" chambers will fit Super Magnum, Magnum, and 2-3/4" receivers. These barrels will handle both 2-3/4" and 3" shells when used on Magnum receivers. Use only 2-3/4" shells when these barrels are used on 2-3/4" receivers."

    "NOTE:
    "All Model 870™ 12-gauge barrels are interchangeable without adjustment, except the Model 870 12-gauge Super Magnum™ and Model 870 12-gauge Special Field."

    That's from their web site.

    Yes, you can put a 870 barrel chambered for the 3" 12 gauge on a 2-3/4 inch 12 gauge 870 receiver, but you won't be able to reliably fire, extract and eject 3 inch shells through it without some work.

    To do so will require that you replace the ejector with one designed for 3 inch shells, there is a "hump" on the ejector that is just about exactly 2.75" back from the staked end of the ejector, on the 2-3/4 inch receiver, and it needs to be 3 inches back to be able to kick 3 inch shells out reliably.
