I went to Walmart yesterday to pick up some 9mm and some 223 for my Glock and the AR I will soon have built. I've always browsed ammo engine just to get an idea for prices. I was a little surprised when the only ammo I saw at Walmart was 223 Remington 40 rounds FMJ for $39.00. I figured the price was inflated because they were running low since they only had 1 brand and 3 boxes left. I then went to Gander mountain, which has a great ammo selection and the best deal I could find was American Eagle 223, 100 rounds for $59.99. I knew I had seen PMC fmj for around $7.00 on cheaper than dirt and ammo engine (20 round boxes) so I decided I would save a bit of money by just ordering it. I see that wolf and tula are running around $4.00 for 20 rounds, but they are steel cased. Should I stay away from steel cased ammo and just get fmj? I have a spikes lower and Daniel defense upper, both chambered in 5.56. Does anyone have experience running steel cased ammo through this setup or a similar one? Thanks in advance for the info!

For average fun at the range, I run Wolf. Most of my .223's see nothing but cheap Russian crap. I'm happy with it, and the paper I'm killing doesn't seem to mind, either. :)

  3. The local dick's here is running 7 bucks a box for Rem UMC 55 fmj. Steel cased is fine as long as you clean well.

My Wal-Mart carries Federal target rounds 100 count for $43. I try to buy a box every paycheck.

Not sure if there is an Academy Sports near you but I buy their Monarch brand of brass for $5 box when they have it on sale. I have also used Tula, Wolf and PMC with decent results.

Tula steel-cased from Walmart for $4 or so including tax works fine for me. That's essentially what I pay per round for 9mm!

  11. I shoot the 100 rnd bulk pack Federal available at Wal-Mart. Its realatively cheap and readily available in my area.

Take a look at http://georgia-arms.com. I have shot several thousand of their stuff in pistol and rifle. Never a problem and cases are reloadable.

I don't shoot Wolf in most of my guns anymore, just personal preference.

In my experience Dick's prices on ammo are usually a joke.

Decent US made Federal brass cased 55gr can currently be had for $6/20rd. box.

223 is one of the few common calibers that is not cheapest at Wal Mart.

The closest I have ever come to getting one of those alleged "great deals" buying ammo online was when DSG had Fiocchi 55gr FMJs for $289/1000 with free shipping, but the price has since went up $30 or so.

Another vote for the above mentioned product and deal. I have dealt with Palmetto state armory and they excellent on their products and service.

I agree if your going to shoot -buy a case by the thousand online! Buying bulk is the cheap way to go! If you don't want a thousand rounds - alot of place sell buy the 500,200 counts as well!

Wideners has 1200 rounds for $338 if you are into reloading. If not, Wolf can be had for around $220 per thousand. I thought I saw a place that had it for $189 but I can't remember where.
