    Hey all,

    Here's what I need.

My dad has our older system in his office and the video card is bad. He needs another one. He isn't going to be doing anything but getting on the internet, playing some music, sending email, writing letters and paying bills. On occasion he will prolly attach his digital camera to it to look at his pictures and print out some of them. I don't want to spend very much, but I don't want a POS either. What would you suggest I look at?

My system that I just got didn't come with a sound card. It is running sound through an onboard chip on the MB and I don't like it. I have the Klipsch ProMedia speakers that have 4 satellites and a sub. I don't so much care if they are surround or not cause I am not watching DVD's on here, but I do want all 4 speakers to work and sound good. My last system (the one above) sounded great and it had a Sound Blaster, I just don't know which one. I am also not going to spend a ton on this either, I shouldn't have to. What would you all suggest as a good card to use with the setup I described?

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

I know many people will recommend high end equipment to your request, but that in not what you asked about.

An good video card based in the nvidia chipset. A 5200 would work good for your dad's PC.

A Turtle Beach Sound card is a good inexpensive card that would make your speakers sound great.

Both can be had at a good price from http://www.newegg.com . You can browse for others at the site.

I have both of these cards installed in one of my PC's and they work great.

I would have to 2nd that :) Both nice choices and they shouldn't break the wallet.

I am a fan of Nvidia video cards but many people claim ATI cards are better at 2D,text and internet surfing.I prefer Turtle Beach sound cards.Their drivers seem to cause fewer problems than Creative Sound Blaster cards and drivers.

Even a PCI-based GeForce 2 MX400 will work fine for his purposes.

A Sound Blaster 16 and a PNY PCI vid card can be had for under $100 total if you know where to look. This is a great place to start!
