I own a Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab in 2WD. I am looking at getting either a Subaru Outback or Toyota RAV4. As you know the Subaru is AWD and the RAV4 can be had in 4WD(and I want the 4WD model). I'm looking to get more mpg than I currently do. Normally I am getting about 21mpg with the Colorado. If I do extra soft pedal I can squeeze 22 out of it but that is it.

Of the two mentioned above, both with 4cyl engines, which would be best in the long run? I'm wanting something that can rack up the miles without a problem. I surely don't want a maintenance hog. Thanks in advance for comments!

for the long run the rav4 wins hands down its a toyota

but for cool factor and fun factor the Subaru all the way, it has better overall performance, and looks better IMO

Get the RAV4. Get it with a V6 though. The 2006 with a V6 gets as good of mileage as the 2005 with a 4 cyl. I have a 2005 and drove a 2006 up from Seattle to Anchorage last fall. Man that V6 is strong. 270 HP. Of course the vehicle only weighs about 3600 lbs or so. I got 28 mpg at 55 mph. 22 around town. When I was running 90 I got around 24mpg. Handling was really sweet. Less air noise than my BMW 5 series. You could easily creep up to 85 and not realize how fast you're going it is so quite. I was really impressed. I'm going to sell my BMW and move up to a V6 RAV4. Best part is resale value. I paid $21,000 for my '05 and it still list KBB for $20,300.
