    Hi everyone,

Are there any ranges within a reasonable drive from Santa Barbara? I'm going to be out there for an extended business trip and need something to do on the weekend... :)

There are only a couple of ranges that I know of off of the San Marcos Pass: the Winchester Gun Club (I think their website is I've never shot there, so I don't know much about it.

The other "range" is basically a designated shooting area also located off of San Marcos Pass. Heading from Santa Barbara towards Lake Cachuma, you make a right on East Camino Cielo Road. About 5 miles or so you'll run into the "range". It's a bumpy, twisty, paved road that could use some repair. The range is basically a dump, no range officers, fees, shoot at your own risk, etc. I've seen the local rangers there numerous times, they don't care if you shoot, as long as you are being safe they shouldn't bother you. I haven't been up there since November though, and the area was closed to shooting due to hazardous fire conditions. I'm not sure if they have reopened it.

I'm actually heading up to Lake Cachuma tomorrow for some camping for the night, I'm packing up the .22's just in case things are open up there. I'll be back on Thursday, so I'll post here if the range is open.

    Thanks Tony,

I just sent them an email to see if they are open to the public. Here in GA a "Club" usually means private membership. If they're open to the public and offer rentals, I'll check them out weekend after next.

There is at least one member of Winchester Gun Club on GT, they could probably clarify the issue of guest use of the club. I have only been to Winchester Gun Club some 30 some odd years ago as a guest of a member. The open shooting area on East Camino Cielo is a reasonable place to shoot, you just have to be careful of idiots who don't understand gun safety, but that said, most of my experiences shooting on East Camino Cielo have been pleasant, and I have sent many thousands of rounds of lead into the hills at that open shooting area.

If I am reading this correctly non-members may shoot for $12 a day on weekends.

Thanks Cali-Glock. I'm here in Santa Barbara (Montecito/Ortega Hill) for the next two weeks. I'd need a range with rentals anyway, so the Winchester club is probably out.
