Hi all, It's been a while since I've had any real serious range time, so I took the afternoon and decided to blow through a bunch of different boxes I've stacked up over the past year (from gun shows, sales at Cabela's, WalMart bargains, etc.). There is absolutely nothing scientific about the data. It's just my personal impression of the stuff I had sitting in the cabinet after a year of not shooting much. The "fps/energy" ratings (where given) were from whatever was either on the box or what I found online. I did not personally chrono any of this ammo. Just thought I'd list it as a point of reference. This exercise really underscored for me the importance of getting a load that just feels right. Worry about who has the latest and greatest bullet design later. Some of these loads I could shoot all day. Others I never want to touch again. My ratings/rankings here are really all about the highly subjective "feel" of the rounds for me. Feel includes: how much I enjoyed shooting the ammo, how quickly I was getting back on target between shots, and how tight my groups looked when I was done. All shots taken from my G23 (my EDC) @ 7 yards, indoor range. I did a similar exercise with .357 mag ammo from my new SP101. Will have this info up soon in a separate post. Enjoy. ------------------------ Liked: Hornady 155 gr XTP; #9132; 1180/479; very tight group, all in 8 ring; like a lot Federal 155 gr JHP XM40HB; 1150/455; some kick but very tight grouping, all inside 8 ring Federal Classic 180 gr Hi-shok JHP 40SWA; snappy but nice; 20 shots w/ 3 in 7 ring, but good center mass grouping Federal 165 gr hydra-shock JHP; P40HS3G; 980/352; nice, not too snappy; 20 rounds all inside 8 ring Winchester Ranger 155 gr JHP, RA40, nice and solid but not snappy; good center mass grouping within 7 ring w/ 25 rounds Didnt like: Winchester Ranger 135 gr JHP Q4368 bad patterning, high and left, 20 shots Winchester Supreme Elite 165 JHP Bonded Personal Protection; do not like, too punchy/snappy; 20 rounds Hornady TAP FTP 180 gr. a little snappy but not terrible; 950/361, good center mass grouping but just didn't "feel" great ----------------------------- Wanna kill these ads?
